How to get your website to be on first page of Google Search?

 DiggThis

In 1996, two PHD students in Stanford University in California, Larry Page and Sergy Brin designed a new search engine that analyzed the relationship between web pages and ranked each page based on the number of back links received to that page. The idea was very simple, yet very powerful; it was a democratic approach which defines the importance of the webpage by the number of sites linking to it. They later on called this search engine Google.

Is it enough to have a high number of backlinks to rank high? The answer is no. Google has dramatically improved its algorithm and the simple democratic approach increased in complexity.

Although many people speculate on the parameters of the used algorithm, the formula is continuously maintained in total secrecy by Google. A secrecy which is fairly understandable, as this is the only approach to preventing blackhat techniques from being used to deceive the famous algorithm.

Arguably, the parameters considered by google could be as high as 200, for example this article on search engine journal Lets Try to Find All 200 Parameters in Google Algorithm has listed 200 parameters which could be somehow related to Google's Algorithm. However, I am going to choose the ones I consider to be most important and discuss it in details. If you want on the first page on google search, make sure you do the following:

Optimize your website content to be relevant to the keywords you want to rank high for

Relevance of the searched Item:

A high factor is granted to relevance of the content of a webpage to that of a search query. This factor is determined by the content of your webpage. Your target as a web administrator is to make sure that the pages of your site are optimized to have high relevance to the search queries you would like your website to rank high for. This can be done by:
  • Choosing proper Keywords in the title of a page
  • Choosing a proper URL structure
  • Using Proper description and keywords in the META data
  • Using Proper Heading tags
  • Make sure the content in the body of your pages truly describe your page title, keywords, description and headings.

Build Good Quality, highly relevant Backlinks

Link Building Strategy:

It is not the mere count of backlinks that matters, Several factors play a role in ranking the pages of your site; here are the most important factors:
  • Quality of Backlinks
  • Relevance of Backlinks
  • Anchor text diversity
  • Diversity of IP addresses of linking sites
  • Geographical diversity of linking sites

Stand Your Ground

Age of the website or domain:

Search engines tend to believe that websites which have been there for 5 years will probably be there for the next 5 years, where as those that started this year are highly probably to be closing soon and are probably going to be one more broken link. Therefore, search engines rank older websites higher.

Be Creative, Do not Copy Others

Content uniqueness:

Google values unique content and penalizes duplicate content. Any website providing valued new information or services is an important website and any website duplicating what is already out there has no or little use.

Provide Useful Content

Unlinked content density (links versus text):

Any website comprising of links to other pages with no real content is probably not going to rank high on Google.

Update Your Website Regularly

Overall site update frequency:

Update Frequency is considered as a measure of the freshness and usefulness of the content provided by a website. A website having the same content for 5 years is most probably outdated.

Adopt Good Development Practices

Page load time:

It is confirmed that Google measures the loading time of websites after the launch of "site performance tool" in Google labs in the webmasters tools. Speed is a very important factor in user satisfaction and Google could be using this factor in its pagerank algorithm.

Don't Blackout

Server reliability / uptime:

Any website having frequent reliability issues would certainly not rank high on Google. If a server is unreachable at the time Google's crawler is trying to access a certain website, this will definitely cause a drop in the website pagerank.
